Introduced in 1991.
Still a frame with a devoted following, what, 15 years later? That this basic design still shows up in current XC full-sus bikes is a credit to this design, even though some would consider this frame the end of Mantis as many of us knew and loved it.
1st generation frames were in-house Mantis production w/ round stock swingarm, downcurved plate rear dropouts, serials beginnning with S, sometimes SL. (1991-1992/early 1993, heat-treatment batches ?-31)It is reasonably common to find earlier main frames with 4th generation swingarms, so check both bb shell and dropouts for serial numbers.
2nd generation frames were outsourced to Redline. Same construction as 1st gen, but serial #s starting with K. (1993-1994, heat-treatment batches 31-37?)
3rd generation frames were outsourced to Control Tech. Same construction as 1st gen, but serial #s starting with C (sometimes 8L), and rear dropouts with a hole in the plate. (1993-1994, heat-treatment batches 37?-39?)
4th generation (post-sale) frames were produced by Control Tech, w/ box section swingarm, CNC dropouts. Serial numbers starting with 95PF. (1995-1997)
